Wednesday 11th February 1903 - Reading 3-6 Nottingham Forest

Forest were enjoying a mixed season in the First Division in 1902-03 when they were drawn to face Reading in the first round of the FA Cup at The City Ground, where the original tie ended goalless.

A crowd of 14,900 packed into Elm Park for the replay on the following Wednesday night and they were treated to an all-time classic as Reading, who hadn't even been admitted to the Football League at this point, gave Forest a real run for their money.

In the end, The Reds ran out 6-3 winners thanks to goals from James Iremonger, Fred Forman, John Calvey (2) and Grenville Morris (2) but they would go on to be knocked out by Stoke City in the next round.

Friday 24th October 1997 - Reading 3-3 Nottingham Forest

On their way to winning the First Division title in the 1997-98 campaign, Forest played out a six-goal thriller with Reading at Elm Park.

The Reds moved into a two-goal lead against the lowly Royals as a brace from Pierre van Hooijdonk put them in command but when Dave Beasant was sent off after 56 minutes and Martin Williams converted the resulting penalty, it looked as if Reading had a way back into the contest.

Kevin Campbell calmed the nerves with a strike to restore The Reds' two-goal advantage but the home side staged a late comeback as goals from Jamie Lambert and Linvoy Primus helped them take a share of the spoils and Forest were left wondering what might have been.

Saturday 28th February 2009 - Reading 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Lewis McGugan’s second half strike earned Forest their first win in five games as they beat promotion hopefuls Reading 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

Forest went into the game in horrid form, having lost four of their previous five games that included a 3-1 defeat to Derby County at The City Ground, whilst Reading were also on a poor run, without a win in three games.

Reading enjoyed the better of the chances, with Jimmy Kebe and Brynjar Gunnarsson missing the target, before Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt missed big opportunities but McGugan won the game for Billy Davies’ side shortly after the hour mark with a smart finish past Adam Federici to score his fourth league goal of the season.

Steve Coppell threw everything at Forest to rescue his side from a surprise home defeat, introducing Leroy Lita and Kalifa Cisse, but Paul Smith was not tested and The Reds earned their first away win since the start of January.

Saturday 28th February 2015 - Reading 0-3 Nottingham Forest

The Reds made it five wins in Dougie Freedman’s first six games in charge with a convincing 3-0 victory at Reading to move within nine points of the play-off places and pile the misery on the FA Cup quarter finalists.

Ben Osborn broke the deadlock from long range early in the second half, before Matty Fryatt scored his sixth league goal to double the lead after a brilliant jinking run. All three points were sealed when Gary Gardner beat Adam Federici with another sensational strike that looped over the Australian goalkeeper.

The defeat meant Steve Clarke’s men had lost three successive home games, despite seeing Pavel Pogrebnyak and former Forest striker Simon Cox miss two golden opportunities to put them ahead in the first half.

In his opening six games as manager, Freedman’s side had scored 19 goals, including four against Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers and this was another memorable day at the Madejski Stadium.

Saturday 11th January 2020 - Reading 1-1 Nottingham Forest

In Forest's most recent visit to Berkshire the spoils were shared, almost unbelievably, despite Ben Watson opening the scoring in the 96th minute.

Forest made the trip to Reading looking to win their fourth straight league game and looked the better side in the first half, but failed to test Rafael Cabral Barbosa as Sammy Ameobi, Lewis Grabban and Watson all wasted chances.

Mark Bowen’s team improved in the second half, with Tyler Blackett smashing the post before Michael Morrison was denied by the onrushing Brice Samba while at the other end, Lewis Grabban was unlucky not to add to his 14 goals when his attempt was cleared off the line by Liam Moore after rounding Barbosa.

Following good work from Joe Worrall to keep the ball in play, Watson drilled the ball through the crowded six-yard box to spark wild scenes amongst the Forest players and staff, only for Jordan Obita’s cross to be bundled into his own net by Tobias Figueiredo to deny The Reds their first victory at Reading since 2015.
