- Forest book place in Emirates FA Cup quarter finals
- Reds to host Liverpool after beating Huddersfield Town 2-1
Head Coach Steve Cooper made two changes to the side which picked up a late point in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Friday night.
Max Lowe, who was ineligible on Friday, returned to the starting line-up to replace Jack Colback at left wing-back, whilst Sam Surridge replaced Keinan Davis in attack for his full Forest debut.
Surridge had first sight of goal inside a minute as his effort deflected wide from Lowe’s cross.
In the ninth minute, James Garner showed great skill to turn on the edge of the Huddersfield area before firing at goal. Jamal Blackman parried the shot, but was able to claim before Surridge could pounce.
Surridge had the ball in the net a couple of minutes later from Brennan Johnson’s cross, but the goal was controversially ruled out for offside.
Then, in the 13th minute, Huddersfield broke the deadlock as Tom Lees rose highest to power in a free header at the near post from Danel Sinani’s corner.
The Reds looked to respond as Djed Spence broke down the right and threaded in Garner whose cross was stopped by Naby Sarr with Surridge threatening. Spence then beat Ruffels for pace down the right and his inviting cross was cleared by Lees six yards from goal.
Duane Holmes tried his luck from distance as he stung Horvath’s palms with a dipping effort on 23 minutes.
But on the half hour, The Reds found a leveller. Yates was threaded through on goal by a fine pass by Garner and was prevented a shot on goal by a good tackle by Sarr, but the ball fell kindly for Surridge who swept a first-time effort into the far corner for his first Reds goal.
Max Lowe was shown a yellow card following a confrontation with Matty Pearson on the left-hand side, before Huddersfield then came close to regaining the lead. The Terriers broke despite strong appeals for a foul, with Pipa striking the post from inside the area. Horvath then superbly denied Sorba Thomas on the rebound down low to his right.
In the 38th minute, The Reds took the lead. From James Garner’s in-swinging free kick, Ryan Yates headed beyond Blackman from a central position for his sixth goal of the campaign and third in five matches.
Two minutes were added on at the end of the half, with Surridge adjudged to have fouled Blackman when challenging for the ball following Johnson’s deflected cross.
The Reds went into the lead 2-1 up in what had been a lively contest between the Championship rivals.
HALF-TIME: Forest 2-1 Huddersfield Town
The second half began with Forest attacking the Trent End and two minutes into the second half, Thomas broke the offside trap before firing into the side netting.
On 53 minutes, Garner’s floated delivery ran all the through to McKenna who headed back across goal but was unable to pick out a Forest man.
Carlos Corberán made a double change in the 54th minute, introducing full-back Harry Toffolo and forward Danny Ward for Josh Ruffels and Naby Sarr.
A minute later, Yates picked out Spence with an excellent threaded ball but the Middlesbrough loanee was unable to control before looking to deliver a cross.
On 64 minutes, Steve Cooper made his first change as Philip Zinckernagel made way for Jack Colback, as James Garner moved into a more advanced midfield role.
Changes were made by either side shortly after when Holmes was replaced by Jordan Rhodes. Keinan Davis replaced Surridge, who received a standing ovation from The City Ground as he left the field.
Horvath was called into action in the 72nd minute, diving away down to his right to keep out Ward’s powerful low drive from a free kick on the edge of the area.
The American was then on-hand to deny Ward again moments later. The Terriers' leading goalscorer latched onto Rhodes' through ball and saw an effort palmed behind for a corner on the angle.
Forest had a big chance to make it 3-1 on 77 minutes. Yates sent Davis away down the left and the Aston Villa loanee cut the ball back for Johnson who flicked into Spence's path, but he could only blaze over from close range.
Sinani made way for Tino Anjorin in The Terriers' fourth change of the night, before Garner's dangerous corner was headed away well at the near post with Steve Cook lurking.
Davis showed excellent work-rate to chase a long ball and apply pressure to Pearson who put the ball behind for a corner, with The City Ground left appealing for handball. Referee Graham Scott waved away claims.
Forest then had a golden opportunity to put the ball to bed when Davis sent Johnson away down the right. The forward picked out Garner at the back post, but the midfielder miscued his effort and shot over the bar from close range.
Ward shot wide from Toffolo's left-sided cross amid pressure from Cook, as five minutes were added on at the end of the second half.
The Reds held on to set up a home tie against Liverpool, booking a place in the quarter finals for the first time since 1996.
