Forest Women fought back bravely and fiercely from a goal down to see off a stern challenge from Brighouse Town at Eastwood on Sunday afternoon.

After Nicole Kemp had handed the West Yorkshire side an early lead, a first-half leveller from Niamh Reynolds was added to by Charlotte Steggles and Hayley James to anchor all three points to the East Midlands.

Andy Cook named an unchanged team from the one that defeated Derby at The City Ground last week, and despite the early goal saw his side remained in control from the first whistle to the last, keeping Forest marching on at the top end of the table.

The Reds saw the majority of the possession come their way in a cagey opening ten minutes with both teams looking to target the wide areas.

It was a swift counterattack from Brighouse that broke the deadlock, however, as a strong run through the middle from Moniqie Watson set-up a cross that was acrobatically diverted home by Kemp.

Forest kept the wind in their sails in the aftermath of the goal as Sophie Domingo forced a low save out of Becky Flaherty just 86 seconds later.

Forests determination and endeavour made the question of an equaliser a matter of when rather than if, and it came on the half-hour mark after some superb individual work by Hayley James, who drove into the right of the visitors' box before cutting the ball back for Niamh Reynolds, who slotted home her second goal in as many games to restore parity.

The pace Brighouse displayed on the break was still something for the hosts to be wary of, as Lisa Woodhouse reminded Forest of their presence in the game by exploding past the back line and forcing Emily Batty into a fine reaction stop.

Mai Moncaster thought she had completed the turnaround for The Reds with 37 minutes on the clock, turning home a fine cross from Amy West at the second time of asking, only to be denied by the linesman's offside flag.

The right flank continued to cause problems for the visiting defence as Forest began to take a firm grip of the contest, as Flaherty was forced into a diving tip away from another dangerous cross from James moments later as the sides went in level at the break.

The second half saw much of the same flow of pace, with Forest seeing a lot of the ball and creating chances with long, direct passing.

Such a pass opened up Domingo on the left-hand side a few minutes after the interval, who fired over from outside the box after the chance had opened up.

More Forest chances came by the hatful as the hosts really started to take the game to Brighouse, as captain Lyndsey Harkin took aim from 25 yards to force Flaherty into a strong stop.

Moncaster’s hunt for a goal continued to run on just before the hour mark, as a volley from the right flank sailed barely wide moments before a drive from the edge rattled the bar.

The woodwork was left shaking once again only a minute later, as Charlotte Greengrass came close to adding to her tally by thumping a header onto the bar and behind.

Gianna Mitchell came on soon after and immediately made her presence felt, lashing an effort towards the bottom corner that was cleared fantastically by a Brighouse shirt.

Mitchell’s immediate impact on the game was added to just a few seconds later, as the forward went down in the area in the 67th minute to win her side a penalty.

With a chance to finally place Forest into the ascendancy on the line, up stepped Charlotte Steggles to lace the ball right into the top corner to put Forest ahead in emphatic and well deserved fashion.

Forest didn’t stop searching for the goal that would wrap up all the points, with substitute Naomi Powell picking out Yasmin Mosby with a lovely flicked through-ball, but the number nine could only divert her strike wide.

That confirmation goal finally came with a minute left on the clock, as Flaherty diverted a strike from range right into the path of James, who made no mistake to tap home a goal that her performance certainly deserved to wrap up a convincing win for The Reds.

The victory takes Forest up to second in the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division, three points behind current league leaders Wolves Women having played a game less.
