Forest were defeated by Newcastle United on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Nuno Espírito Santo made 11 changes to the side that successfully defeated Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on the weekend.

The visitors took the lead after just 17 seconds when Alexander Isak was played through and after seeing his shot saved by Carlos Miguel on his competitive Forest debut, Joe Willock was on hand to finish into an open net.

Forest responded well to the early setback in what was a fast-paced and end-to-end first half as Taiwo Awoniyi headed over from an Eric da Silva Moreira cross on the five-minute mark.

Ramon Sosa impressed on his debut and his pinpoint cross was met by Jota Silva whose header was hooked off the line after Pope was beaten. Sosa then delivered another delicious ball, this time from a freekick, that Awoniyi couldn’t steer home after meeting the effort at pace.

After half-time, Forest drew level after a long throw by debutant Alex Moreno flicked off Joelinton in a Newcastle shirt and fell to Jota Silva, who lashed a powerful effort in off the post.

The remainder of the second half was tightly contested, with Forest edging the majority before Miguel was tested twice late on, including getting strong hands to a curling effort by Lewis Hall.

Penalties followed with Newcastle emerging victorious and progressing to round three.
