Forest 2-0 Luton Town

Nottingham Forest’s Emirates FA Cup journey began on home soil when the Reds were drawn to face Championship outfit Luton Town at The City Ground.

On a potentially tricky afternoon in NG2, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side would book a place in round four thanks to goals either side of the break from skipper Ryan Yates and Ramón Sosa.

Liam Walsh called Carlos Miguel into action in the first half, when the Forest stopper tipped the midfielder’s long-range effort over the bar.

Yates almost opened the scoring for the Reds not long after when his rasping effort clipped the crossbar on its way into the Bridgford End.

After Miguel denied Isiah Jones on his Luton debut, Yates would head the Reds in front five minutes before the break. The skipper stooped to head Sosa’s cross into the Hatters’ net.

On 68 minutes, Yates was in the thick of the action once more when he released Jota on the Forest right. The Portuguese squared for Sosa to finish beyond Thomas Kaminski in the visitors’ goal to secure Forest’s progress.

Exeter City 2-2 Forest (Forest win 4-2 on penalties) |

Success against Luton meant a trip to Devon and Exeter City in the fourth round of the competition.

Josh Magennis put a fourth round upset on the cards on five minutes, tapping the ball into the net.

Ramón Sosa netted his second goal in the competition in 2024/25 when he placed the ball into the Exeter net after being picked out by Ibrahim Sangaré.

Taiwo Awoniyi completed the turnaround on 37 minutes, finishing well from the edge of the box from another Sangaré pass.

Five minutes into the second period, the home side were level once more when Magennis netted his second of the afternoon to send the tie to extra time, and ultimately penalties.

Matz Sels, who replaced the injured Miguel during the game, denied Reece Cole in the shoot-out before Angus Macdonald struck the crossbar, allowing Neco Williams to convert 12 yards to secure the Reds progress to round five.

Forest 1-1 Ipswich Town (Forest win 5-4 on penalties)

Ipswich Town would be Forest’s next opponents in the competition, with The City Ground playing host to the fifth round tie.

After a tight opening 45 minutes at The City Ground in which Ibrahim Sangaré came closest to opening the scoring when his glancing header drifted just wide of goal, the away side would go ahead early in the second half.

George Hirst got free at the back post from a Ben Johnson corner to head the ball past Matz Sels to give the Tractor Boys the lead.

On 68 minutes, Forest found the equaliser when Anthony Elanga crossed for Ryan Yates to head home yards from goal for his second goal in the competition this season.

Callum Hudson-Odoi came closest to securing progress for the Reds in normal time when his curling effort clipped the crossbar on its way over.

But penalties it would be to decide who would progress to the quarter finals, and after nine successful penalties, five from Forest and four from the away side, up stepped Jack Taylor to take the shoot-out to sudden death.

Matz Sels leaped to his left to keep out the spot kick and send the Reds into the quarter finals against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
